Note on a polytropic β−model to fit the X-ray surface brightness of clusters of galaxies

چکیده

In this note, I suggest that the β−model used to fit the X-ray surface brightness profiles of extended sources, like groups and clusters of galaxies, has to be corrected when the counts are collected in a wide energy band comparable to the mean temperature of the source and a significant gradient in the gas temperature is observed. I present a revised version of the β−model for the X-ray brightness that applies to a intracluster gas with temperature and density related by a polytropic equation and extends the standard version that is strictly valid for an isothermal gas. Given a temperature gradient observed through an energy window of 1–10 keV typical for the new generation of X-ray observatories, the β parameter can change systematically up to 20 per cent from the value obtained under isothermal assumption, i.e. by an amount larger that any statistical uncertainty obtained from the present data. Within the virial regions of typical clusters of galaxies, these systematic corrections affect the total gravitating mass estimate by 5–10 per cent, the gas mass by 10–30 per cent and the gas fraction value up to 50 per cent, when compared to the measurements obtained under the isothermal assumption.

Radial density and temperature profiles of the intracluster gas constructed jointly from the X-ray surface brightness measurement and the universal density profile

In this paper we have made an attempt to derive the radial profiles of density and temperature of intracluster gas based on the two well-established facts at present: the X-ray observed surface brightness of clusters described by the standard β model and the (NFW) universal density profile as the underlying dark matter distribution. We have numerically solved the hydrostatic equation by demandi...

Resolving the Beta – Discrepancy for Clusters of Galaxies

Previous comparisons of optical and X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies have led to the so-called “β – discrepancy” that has persisted for the last decade. The standard hydrostatic-isothermal model for clusters predicts that the parameter βspec ≡ σ 2 r/(kT/μmp), which describes the ratio of energy per unit mass in galaxies to that in the gas, should equal the parameter βfit (where ρgas(r...

A new analysis of velocity distribution, optical photometry and X-ray surface brightness from ROSAT PSPC data of the galaxy cluster A 2319 is presented. The temperature profile derived from ASCA data (Markevitch 1996) is taken into account. A method to check the hydrostatic model in the presence of a temperature gradient is proposed. Consistency of the hydrostatic isothermal model and the expla...

On the matter distribution of galaxy clusters containing a compact core

Increasing evidences provided primarily by the cluster lensing and numerical simulations of cluster formation indicate that galaxy clusters may contain compact cores that are substantially smaller than the cores revealed by the X-ray observations of hot intracluster gas.
